Comment: I was inpatient at this hospital a couple of years ago. When I first arrived, after being seen in the emergency room, I was strip searched (where I also had to bend over and cough – extremely embarrassing) and then I was interviewed by one of the staff about why I was there and what medication I was currently on.
I was on suicide watch for the first 4 days I was there. I was released after 5 days. While on suicide watch, I could not go into my assigned room unless I needed to shower or use the bathroom and I had to be supervised. It is extremely difficult to use the bathroom when someone is watching you. I also had to sleep on a mattress on the floor of the common area while on suicide watch.
There was an average of 7 or 8 of us on watch that had to sleep in the open while being supervised all night. There was a TV in the common area that was on most of the day. Shows and movies were carefully screened by staff so that nothing was on TV that may be triggering to anyone. There was an outdoor area that patient were allowed to go out to if they weren’t on watch. A staff member had to be free to go out and supervise though and there were only a couple times anyone was allowed out while I was there.
Food was mediocre. You had to eat in the common room and had limited food selections if you were on watch. If you weren’t, you could go to the cafeteria for meals and had a much better selection. You saw your psychiatrist daily and they tried to get you a couple of visits with a therapist during your stay. There wasn’t much in the way of recreational activities. The scheduled groups were followed sporadically.
I often felt like my therapist and doctor didn’t listen to my input of what things I knew were of help to me. I had a couple complete breakdowns while I was here because I felt like the staff wasn’t listening to me and considering my input. I would not consider the environment at this place to be very helpful. There were a couple of staff members that really cared about the patients. I felt like the rest were just there for a paycheck.
